1. Golden temple
The Golden Temple in Amritsar, India (Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar), is one of the most famous gurudwaras in Amritsar and serves not only as a central religious hub for Sikhs but also stands as a symbol of universal brotherhood and equality. It welcomes people of all backgrounds – regardless of caste, creed, or race – to seek spiritual solace and religious fulfillment freely. Moreover, it embodies the distinct identity, glory, and heritage of the Sikh community.
Describing the philosophy, ideology, and inner and outer beauty of Sri Darbar Sahib is a profound endeavor that transcends mere words; it is an experience in itself.Following the guidance of Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji, Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji commenced the excavation of the Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank) of Sri Darbar Sahib in 1577 A.D. The tank was later lined with bricks by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji on December 15, 1588, who also initiated the construction of Sri Darbar Sahib.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the scripture of the Sikhs, was first installed at Sri Darbar Sahib on August 16, 1604 A.D., with Baba Budha Ji appointed as its first Head Priest.The architecture of the Golden Temple features unique Sikh characteristics. Constructed at a lower level than the surrounding land, it imparts teachings of egalitarianism and humility. 2. Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji
GURUDWARA SHAHEED BABA DEEP SINGH JI (SHAHEEDAN SAHIB) is situated in the Distt City Amritsar. It is situated in Chattiwind Gate on Tarn Taran road. In the year 1757 when BABA DEEP SINGH JI got the news that Taimurshah & Jahan Khan have shown disrespect for SHRI DARBAR SAHIB & also started filling the holy sarovar, even though BABA JI was in old age he carried a 18 ser heavy Khanda in his hand to free SHRI DARBAR SAHIB. He took pledge to teach a lesson to the cruel and started his journey for SHRI AMRITSAR SAHIB.
On hearing this , Jahan Khan had made thousands of his soldiers ready on the outskirts of the town near Gohalvadh village. There was a fierce battle. BABA JI was still far from the town when during his battle with Jahan Khan, he was beheaded. A Singh standing close to BABA JI when reminded BABA JI of his pledge, such a miracle happened which had never happened in the world before. BABA JI held his head in his left hand & with his right hand he swayed the Khanda with such a force that the enemies started running.
Like this, fighting the fierce battle, BABA JI reached SHRI AMRITSAR and offered his head at SHRI HARMANDAR SAHIB. Antim Sanskar of BABA DEEP SINGH JI and other Shaheed Singhs was done here.
3. Gurudwara Ramsar Sahib
Gurudwara Shri Ramsar Sahib is located in the Chattiwind Gate area of Amritsar. This sacred site was established by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who had a holy tank (Sarovar) excavated and named it Ramsar Sahib in honor of Shri Guru Ramdas Ji. It was a tranquil place where Guru Sahib set up his tent on the southern side of the Sarovar.Guru Arjan Dev Ji began dictating the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to Bhai Gurdas Ji at this site, incorporating the hymns of the first four Gurus, including his own, and selections from Hindu and Muslim mystic saints. Upon its completion in 1604, the holy scripture was installed with due honor at Shri Harimandir Sahib. Today, the modern printing of the Shri Guru Granth Sahib is carried out here.
Gurudwara Ramsar Sahib, one of the notable gurudwaras in Amritsar, is situated on the bank of its namesake pool, northeast of the Golden Temple. Guru Arjan Dev Ji spent over a year here in seclusion with Bhai Gurdas, compiling the holy Adi Granth. This sacred volume was completed in 1604 and ceremoniously installed in Harmandir Sahib. It embodies the unity of God and the brotherhood of mankind, preserving the pure philosophy of the Gurus for perpetual guidance.
The Adi Granth, arranged according to musical measures for singing, was later given the status of the Guru by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Before his departure on October 7, 1708, he declared, “Accept Guru Granth Sahib as the visible image of the Guru.” This proclamation ended the line of human Gurus, enjoining Sikhs to revere the Granth Sahib as their eternal Guru. Thus, Gurudwara Ramsar, where the sacred text was compiled, holds immense significance for Sikhs.
4. Gurudwara Bibeksar Sahib
Gurudwara Bibeksar Sahib is a serene sanctuary embodying Sikh spiritual heritage. Its tranquil atmosphere invites devotees to immerse themselves in prayer and contemplation, while its historic significance adds cultural richness to the sacred site.Bibeksar (built: 1628) This sarovar is located to south/south-east of the most important landmark for the Sikhs, Harminder Sahib in the city of Amritsar. Gurdwara Bibeksar Sahib is situated on the banks of the Bibeksar Sarovar.
The sarovar was built by Guru Hargobind Singh ji the 6th Guru of Sikhisam, and the present beautiful Gurudwara was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The two ancient villages of Chatiwind and Sultanwind borders the gurdwara.
Nearby was also a beautiful garden where the Guru used to come for recreation. He usually took rest on the edge of the tank where now stands the Gurdwara Bibeksar. Sometimes, he held his meetings here in the evening. Also this is where the Guru organized his followers on military lines following skirmishes with the Mughal forces.
5. Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib
Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib is a revered Sikh pilgrimage site known for its historical significance and architectural beauty. It holds a special place in Sikh history as the place where Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, performed a six-day meditation.
After Breakfast visit Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib is situated on the Amritsar – Gurusar Sultan Road, near village Guru ki Vadali, seven kms from Amritsar.Guru ki Vadali is the birthplace of the Sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, the son of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. To celebrate the birth of his son, Guru Arjan Dev Ji constructed a big well at this place. This well had six Persian wheels to draw out the water and thus came to be known as Chheharta, the well with six wheels. This well helped in removing water scarcity in the region and enabled the greening of the fields.
6. Gurudwara Baba Budha Sahib
Gurudwara Baba Budha Sahib, nestled in Jhabal Kalan, Amritsar, is a sacred site revered by Sikhs worldwide. It commemorates the revered Baba Budha Ji, a prominent figure in Sikh history known for his spiritual guidance and devotion.
Gurdwara Baba Budda Sahib Baba Buddha ji spent much of his life here. Guru Arjan Dev also visited this place at some stage. Also known as Gurudwara Bir Baba Buddha this is situated in the revenue limits of the village of Thatta, 20 km south of Amritsar. The shrine honours and commemorates Baba Buddha (1506 – 1631), the venerable Sikh of the time of Guru Nanak who lived long enough to anoint five succeeding Gurus.
7. Gurudwara Tarn Taran Sahib
Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib, officially Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, is a Gurudwara established by the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, in the city ofTarn Taran Sahib, Punjab, India. The site has the distinction of having the largest sarovar (water pond) of all the gurdwaras. It is famous for the monthly gathering of pilgrims on the day of Amavas (a no-moon night). It is near Harminder Sahib Amritsar.
the Fifth Sikh Guru, bought the land around Tarn Taran for 157,000 mohar. Jatt Chaudhri (Chief) of Thathi Khara Village Amrik Dhillon did prayer before the asked guru sahib to stay at Thathi Khara while the Kaar Seva was ongoing, in the year Sambat 1647 (1590) in the Land of Majha Region the traditional home of the Sikh Faith. At that time, the digging of the lake tank started. When the tank was completed, it was the biggest and largest sarovar lake in the whole of Punjab.
8. Gurudwara Manji Sahib
This gurdwara is dedicated to the fifth Guru, Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. He composed the Sukhmani Sahib here. This gurdwara is located on the banks of the sarovar and across the sarovar is Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib where the Guru Granth Sahib was written.This Gurdwara commemorates Baba Bota Singh and Baba Garja Singh, who bravely confronted Mughal forces on July 27, 1739, near Sarai Nurdin, approximately 6 km from Taran Taran City. Both attained martyrdom in the battle against the Mughals.
The Gurdwara is located within the Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Complex at Chattiwind Gate, Amritsar, and one of the prominent Gurudwaras in Amritsar.
9. Gurudwara Baba Tahla Sahib
Gurdwara Sri Tahla Sahib Chabba marks the place where Baba Deep Singh fought the battle against the mughals led by Jahan Khan. Baba Deep Singh Ji fought with his 15kg (about 32 lbs.) khanda (double-edged sword). Each Sikh fought with such great valor and courage that the enemy was almost defeated. During the midst of battle, a large army of reinforcements arrived for Jahan Khan’s men, turning the odds against the Sikhs. Yet, the Sikhs with Baba Deep Singh Ji as their head continued fighting and advanced towards Amritsar. Then, a miracle occured, such which had never happened in the world before.
During the clash, one of the mughal commanders, Jamal Khan, attacked Baba Deep Singh Ji. As they fought, both men swung their weapons with great force, leaving both of their heads separated from their bodies. At the place, where Baba Deep Singh was beheaded, there was a very big Tahli (Dalbergia sissoo) tree hence the Gurdwara is known as Gurdwara Sri Tahla Sahib Chabba. After seeing this scene, a young Sikh warrior called out to Baba Ji, “..Baba Ji you had said in ardaas that you should fall martyr within the precincts of Darbar sahib, but you seem to be retiring from the fight here…”.
Upon hearing this, Baba Deep Singh Ji immediately stood up, holding his severed head in his left hand and with his right hand he swayed the Khanda with such force that the mughals retreated. Although mortally wounded Baba Deep Singh was able to continue fighting until he was able to make his way to Harmandir Sahib. Baba Deep Singh reached Sri Harmandir Sahib and offered his head.
10. Gurudwara Mata Kaulan Ji
Gurudwara Mata Kaulan or Gurudwara Kaulsar Sahib is a sacred Sikh shrine situated on the back side of Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple in Amritsar town of Punjab. It is one of the historical gurudwaras in Punjab and also one of the top places to visit in Amritsar.
Gurudwara Mata Kaulan is dedicated to Bibi Kaulan, a spiritual Muslim Lady, daughter of Qazi of Lahore. Her father had pronounced her death, due to her devotion to Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Saint Main Mir ji who was living in the same village rescued her and brought her in the protection of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Bibi Kaulan spent her rest of life devoting to service of mankind and meditation. The Samadhi of Mata Kaulan lies at the western end of the Kaulsar Gurdwara.
The sarovar lies next to the Gurudwara Mata Kaulan is known as Kaulsar Sahib or Kaulsar Sarovar. Kaulsar is one of the five holy tanks in the holy city of Amritsar and was got excavated on the orders of Guru Hargobind Sahib. The excavation of Kaulsar Sarovar was started in 1624 CE and was completed in 1627 CE under the supervision of Baba Buddha ji, first head granthi of the Golden Temple. Guru Sahib has directed all devotees to take a dip in Kaulsar sahib sarovar before going to Golden Temple.
11. Akal Takath
Located right opposite the Golden Temple, the Akal Takht represents one of the five seats of power and religious authority in Sikhism. This place was established by Guru Hargobind Ji to symbolize political sovereignty and justice and to address the earthly concerns of the Sikh.
Like the Golden Temple, the Akal Takht also suffered damage during the course of history. It was the site where Operation Blue Star, the 1984 military action under the orders of Indira Gandhi, took place. The operation heavily destroyed the building. Today, it has been rebuilt into a magnificent five-storied white edifice with a golden dome.
12. Gurudwara Nanaksar Sahib
GURUDWARA SHRI NANAKSAR SAHIB, is situated in the Village Verka Distt Amritsar. It marks the place where SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI stoped while going to Batala. GURU SAHIB sat on the bank of a small pond. People started coming to seek blessings of GURU SAHIB.
One lady came to GURU SAHIB whose child was suffering from Marasmus, GURU SAHIB asked her to make her child bath in that sarovar. And the child was cured with that. Later GURU SAHIB blessed that Sarovar that who so ever will take bath in that sarovar on five sundays children will be cured.“Suke Hare kiye Khin Mahe”
